Philadelphia Roll Ingredients

This Philly roll sushi recipe makes two sushi rolls, because we’re showing two different techniques. But you can very easily make one roll just by cutting the recipe in half.

Here’s what you’ll need in your kitchen

  • A sushi rolling mat: This is a small bamboo mat to help you mold your sushi roll. If you don’t have one, you can use a flexible placemat.
  • Rice cooker: You’ll need to cook some rice, so a rice cooker is ideal. But if you don’t have one, no problem. Just use a saucepan with the lid.
  • Saran Wrap: Using a bit of saran wrap under the sheet of Nori will help you keep your bamboo mat clean.

  • 2 sheets Nori
  • 2 – 4 pieces smoked salmon
  • 4 oz cream cheese
  • ½ cucumber
  • 2 cups sushi rice
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds (optional)

Remember, you don’t have to be super exact with the amount of salmon, cream cheese, and cucumber you use. You will mainly eyeball the amounts, adding as much as you like in your own Philly sushi roll.

Sushi Rice Vinegar

Unlike with the Philadelphia role ingredients, you want to be more precise when you make the sushi rice vinegar. These are the correct proportions:

  • ¼ cup rice vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt

How to make sushi rice for a Philadelphia roll

You want to use short grain or medium grain rice to make sushi rice. Then, prepare the rice typically by using a 1:1 ratio. With a rice cooker, simply add the ingredients and press start.

If you’re using the sauce pan method, bring the ingredients to a boil and then reduce the heat and simmer about 15 minutes until the water has absorbed.

Make sushi rice vinegar by combining rice wine vinegar, sugar, and salt in a small bowl. You may need to gently heat the ingredients to combine them so that the sugar and salt dissolve.

Move the rice from the rice cooker or saucepan to a larger bowl. Then, drizzle the vinegar over the sushi rice and cut the rice with a spatula or large spoon to coat each grain evenly.

Assembling the Philly Roll

Next, it’s time to assemble your Philadelphia. sushi roll. Place a sheet of roasted nori facing rough side up with the perforations running parallel to the sushi rolling mat.

Cover the nori evenly with one cup of sushi rice, leaving about ½ inch edge at the top. This little part will seal to the roll.

Add optional sesame seeds, sprinkling evenly over the rice.

Now, at this stage, you can either:

  • flip the nori sheet over so the rice side is facing down if you want the rice on the outside of your Philly roll.
  • leave the rice side facing up to include the rice on the inside of Philadelphia roll sushi.

Filling the sushi

Next, take a minute to prepare your filling ingredients. First, remove the seeds from the cucumber and cut the cucumber into thin batons. Then cut a few batons from a block of cream cheese.
