Cowboy dishes have that extra zip and punch of spice and these cowboy mashed potatoes are no different!
This mashed potato recipe makes an excellent side dish for grilled meat like steak or chicken, and with its vibrant color, it looks great on a table.
How to Make Cowboy Mashed Potatoes
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Potatoes: You’ll use about 3 pounds of potatoes, cubed. You can use any type of potatoes, but Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes tend to be the best for mashed potatoes.
- Butter
- Milk or Heavy Cream
- Salt
- Black pepper
Cowboy Spices
- Dijon mustard
- Fresh Chopped Chives
- Fresh Chopped Parsley
- Garlic, minced
- Paprika
- Cayenne
- Chili flakes
- lemon zest (optional)
First, prepare traditional mashed potatoes by peeling the potatoes and cutting them into cubes about a half inch thick. Then, boil the cubes for about 20 – 25 minutes until you can easily slide a fork into them, or when they are “fork tender.”

In a small mixing bowl, just mix the fresh herbs and spices together until they’re well combined.

Once your potatoes are ready, drain them in a colander and then add them to a large mixing bowl. Add the remaining ingredients: butter, milk, salt and pepper and bowl of cowboy spices. Use a potato masher to combine thoroughly.
Garnish with fresh chopped chives or parsley.

You can also make Cowboy Mashed Potatoes using Cowboy butter, if you have that on hand. Simply substitute Cowboy Butter for the butter in a traditional mashed potatoes recipe!
